A slow internet connection can be frustrating, especially when you’re trying to attend an online class, join a meeting, stream a movie, or play games. 

However, you can take simple steps to speed up your internet. 

Here are some helpful ways to fix a slow connection.

Restart Your Modem and Router

One of the first things you should try is restarting your modem and router. This helps clear out any glitches or temporary problems with the connection. 

Unplug both devices from the power source, wait about 30 seconds, and plug them back in. Once everything restarts, check if the internet speed has improved.

Check Cables and Connections

Sometimes the issue is as simple as a loose or damaged cable. Make sure all wires connected to your router, modem, and computer are secure and in good condition. 

A damaged cable can cause interruptions and lower your internet speed.

Change Router Position

Where you place your router makes a big difference. The signal can be weak if your router is hidden in a corner, behind furniture, or near a wall. 

Place the router in a central, open space in your home. 

Reduce Network Load

If multiple people are using the internet at the same time, your connection might slow down. This is called network congestion. Try limiting the number of devices connected at once. 

For example, if someone downloads a large file or streams in 4K, it might slow things down for everyone else. 

Keep Your Devices Updated

Sometimes the problem isn’t your internet, but your device. You should verify that your computer, phone, tablet, and router have the latest software updates. 

These updates often include improvements that help your device connect to the internet more easily.

Test Your Internet Speed

A good idea is to check your internet speed to verify that you’re getting what you pay for. You can test it here to get a quick look at your upload and download speeds.

If your speed test shows results that are much slower than your plan, and none of the fixes above help, the issue might be with your service provider.

Try a Wired Connection

Wi-Fi is convenient, but can be unstable in certain areas of your home. If you’re working on something important or gaming online, use an Ethernet cable to connect your device directly to the router. 

Wired connections are faster, more reliable, and not affected by walls or interference.
