Supporting local shops and services in Suffolk is a big deal. Every time we spend $100 at a neighborhood business, approximately $68 stays right here in our community. That’s because those small business owners live and work among us: they hire our neighbors, pay local taxes, and offer unique products and services. In fact, small businesses generate two-thirds of all new jobs in America. Put simply, our little bakeries, hardware stores and diners help define this area, “the lifeblood of small towns”. They keep Suffolk’s economy and character thriving, and their success makes our whole community stronger.

Picture the hometown café that knew your favorite coffee order or the mechanic who stayed late to fix your car. The Suffolk News-Herald’s Local’s Choice lets us shine a light on those very local heroes. When local businesses thrive, they often sponsor our Little League teams, school fundraisers and charity drives, fostering a sense of community and mutual support. Participating in the Hometown Choice Awards is our way of saying “thank you.” It turns shopping into a celebration. Each nomination is a public pat on the back for the shops and services that contribute to our town’s identity – whether it’s the florist who makes every wedding brighter or the butcher who donates burgers to the fire department.

Now it’s your turn to give back. Nominations for the Local’s Choice Awards are open through June 8. Just click here and tell us which local businesses deserve a shout-out. Every nomination you make – whether for Best BBQ, Best Auto Service, or Best Artisan Bakery – shows a business owner that their hard work is appreciated. Remember, supporting these businesses means putting dollars back into our community and celebrating the people who make Suffolk feel like home. So grab a cup of coffee from a locally owned café, fill out those nomination forms online, and let’s make this year’s Local’s Choice Awards the most heartfelt yet..
