Area 29 Special Olympics held its annual swim meet on May 10 at the YMCA on Godwin Boulevard. Teams from Suffolk, Dare County, Virginia Beach, and Chesapeake competed.

Special Olympics is a nonprofit organization that provides year-round training and athletic competitions to people with intellectual disabilities. Participants of all ages are welcome, and there is no cost to them.

After meeting through the Special Olympics in Virginia Beach, husband and wife Michael and Amy Clark started Area 29 serving Suffolk, Isle of White, Franklin, and Southampton counties.

With only two athletes in swimming at first, Michael said watching the organization grow over the last 22 years has been “rewarding.”

Currently, there are about 30 athletes who have a swim, bowling, and golf team. They have also previously offered track and field, soccer, volleyball, and basketball.
