The Suffolk Police Department is mourning the loss of K-9 Scout, a 4-year-old Bloodhound who died early Tuesday, May 27, following a medical emergency.

Scout, the department’s first Bloodhound in nearly 50 years, was treated at local veterinary facilities but did not recover, according to Suffolk Police.

Scout joined the department in May 2021 and was paired with handler Master Police Officer S. Powell. After completing training, the duo earned certification for trailing with distinction through the Virginia Police Work Dog Association. Scout officially began service in 2022 and was assigned to the department’s Search and Rescue Team.

Throughout his career, Scout participated in more than 100 tracking and location operations. He received two departmental commendations and three noteworthy performance awards. In 2023, Scout and MPO Powell were jointly honored with an Award of Merit from the Virginia Police Work Dog Association for multiple successful finds.

Scout was also a regular presence at community outreach events.

“The Suffolk Police Department extends our condolences to K-9 Scout’s handler, MPO Powell, members of the Suffolk Police Department’s Canine Unit, and the community as a whole,” Suffolk Police Chief James “Danny” Buie said in a statement. “K-9 Scout was a dedicated member of our team that served the citizens of Suffolk well for several years.”

Buie also thanked the staff of Tidewater Animal Clinic and The Cove for their care and efforts.
