According to the Suffolk Department of Fire & Rescue, the incident was reported at 12:43 p.m. when Suffolk Emergency Communications received a call about a possible gas leak in the 2000 block of Holland Road.

Engine 1 arrived on scene at 12:51 p.m. and crews immediately detected a strong odor of natural gas. Fire officials determined that an 8-inch high-pressure gas main had been ruptured by an excavator working in the area.

Virginia Natural Gas (VNG) was notified and responded to the scene, arriving at 1:17 p.m. to begin mitigation efforts. Due to the high volume of gas escaping from the damaged line, Suffolk Fire & Rescue shut down a section of Route 58 at Forest Glen Drive as a safety precaution.

Fire crews and police officers diverted traffic, and Suffolk Public Works personnel established detour routes for motorists.

No injuries were reported, and crews remained on scene to monitor the situation and assist VNG technicians as they worked to secure the line.
