Three residents were injured Monday evening when a large tree fell onto a single-story commercial building in the 2500 block of Pruden Boulevard, partially collapsing the structure and damaging several rooms in a skilled nursing facility, according to Suffolk Fire and Rescue.
The incident was dispatched by the Suffolk Emergency Communications Center at 6:34 p.m. Crews arrived on scene at 6:38 p.m. to find the tree had penetrated the roof, causing trusses and sheet rock to collapse into three rooms.
Three residents were injured during the collapse and were assisted by facility staff in evacuating their rooms before emergency crews arrived. Firefighters conducted a search of the building and confirmed there were no trapped occupants.
According to a media release from Suffolk Fire and Rescue, the damage was confined to one wing of the facility. Two of the three rooms impacted sustained significant structural damage. A total of seven rooms in the affected wing have been deemed uninhabitable.
Paramedics treated and transported the three injured residents, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries. A fourth resident was transported for a medical issue unrelated to the collapse.
Suffolk’s Technical Rescue Team assessed the building’s structural integrity and determined that damage was isolated to the wing struck by the tree. That section has been cordoned off from other parts of the facility to protect residents and staff.
The building’s management is working with the Fire Marshal, a Neighborhood and Community Development inspector, and Dominion Energy to isolate power and ensure that both the fire alarm and suppression systems remain functional.
Officials said 14 uninjured residents from the damaged wing are being relocated to another managed facility by the facility’s staff.
