Suffolk offices to close for Juneteenth holiday

In observance of Juneteenth, all Suffolk city government offices will be closed Thursday, June 19. Normal operations are scheduled to resume Friday, June 20, at 8:30 a.m.
Juneteenth, a state-recognized holiday in Virginia, marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States. All state offices, including those in Suffolk, will be closed in recognition.
Essential services will continue without interruption. The Suffolk Public Works Department will collect trash and recyclables on its regular schedule June 19 and 20. Residents are reminded to place waste curbside by 7 a.m. on collection days. For more information, Public Works can be reached at 757-514-7630.
The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) Transfer Station and the Regional Landfill in Suffolk will be closed on Thursday, June 19, 2025.
Suffolk Transit will operate on a regular schedule June 19 and will offer fare-free rides throughout the day.
Several recreation and city facilities will close in observance of the holiday. All Suffolk Joint Use Recreation Centers—including Kings Fork, Creekside, Northern Shores, Oakland, Booker T. Washington, and Mack Benn Jr.—will be closed Thursday, June 19 and reopen Friday, June 20. The East Suffolk, Curtis Milteer and Bennett’s Creek Recreation Centers, along with the Parks and Recreation Administration Office, will follow the same schedule.
City parks—Lone Star Lakes, Lake Meade, Sleepy Hole and Bennett’s Creek—will remain open to the public Thursday, though no attendants will be on duty.
The Suffolk Art Gallery will be closed Thursday, June 19 and will reopen Friday, June 20. Cypress Park & Pool will remain open during the holiday.
All Suffolk Public Library locations—Morgan Memorial, North Suffolk and Chuckatuck—will be closed Thursday, June 19. Morgan Memorial and North Suffolk will reopen Friday, June 20 at 10 a.m., while Chuckatuck will reopen Monday, June 23, at 10 a.m.
The Suffolk Visitor Center will remain open Thursday, June 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Due to major repairs, the Suffolk Seaboard Station Railroad Museum remains closed until further notice.
Operations at the Suffolk Executive Airport will continue Thursday, June 19. While the terminal will be unmanned, the airfield, self-service fuel island and restaurant will remain open.
