A proposed entertainment center in Suffolk took a step forward June 17 as the city’s Planning Commission unanimously approved a conditional use permit for Golden Luxe, LLC. The venue will move into a former batting cage facility at 813 W. Constance Road, Suite B, but only after the commission imposed earlier closing hours than the owners had requested.
Golden Luxe plans to repurpose the former Sluggers building into an indoor recreation space featuring a skating rink, trampolines and arcade games. The family-oriented venue aims to serve guests of all ages, according to owner and applicant Dwight James.
James asked commissioners to allow the business to stay open until 2 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, arguing that extended hours would help the business remain viable while offering safe, structured events such as teen nights, private parties and adult skate sessions.
“These late night hours are essential for the sustainability of our business model,” James told commissioners. “Our goal is not just to run a skating rink, we want to build a vibrant, safe and inclusive space for families and young people in Suffolk.”
City planning staff, however, recommended a midnight closing time on weekends, citing consistency with similar entertainment venues downtown. Staff also confirmed that other departments, including Public Utilities, Public Works, and the Fire Marshal’s Office, had no objections to the plan. The venue is expected to serve quick-serve food and bottled alcoholic beverages in designated areas.
Ultimately, commissioners sided with staff, voting 7-0 to approve the permit with the recommended hours. Under the approved plan, Golden Luxe will be allowed to operate from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and from 9 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
The proposal now heads to City Council for a final vote on July 16.
