Suffolk residents will have an opportunity to responsibly declutter and give back to the community during the upcoming Keep Suffolk Beautiful Recycling Drive, set for Saturday, June 28.
The free, drive-through event will take place from 8 to 11 a.m. at Florence Bowser Elementary School, located at 4540 Nansemond Parkway.
Designed to help residents clear out garages, sheds, and attics, the drive will accept a wide range of household items for recycling or safe disposal. One of the most requested services—on-site document shredding—will again be available.
Participants can also support neighbors in need by bringing food and toiletry donations for the Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center, which will be accepting contributions at the event.
Accepted recyclables and donations include:
- Electronics (excluding tube TVs or any television larger than 42 inches)
- Gently used clothing and household wares
- Plastic bottles and jugs labeled #1 and #2
- Cardboard, mixed paper, and magazines
- Plastic grocery bags
- Glass containers
In addition, the Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) will collect household hazardous waste. Accepted items include used oil, batteries, gasoline, household cleaners, propane tanks, paint, pesticides, CFL bulbs, and other common chemicals. Residents must show ID and are limited to either 75 pounds or five gallons of liquid waste.
Other specialty collections at the event include:
- Eyeglasses and hearing aids (collected by the Lion’s Club)
- Gently used plant pots (collected by Suffolk Master Gardeners)
- Worn U.S. flags for proper decommissioning (collected by Keep Suffolk Beautiful)
Suffolk Mosquito Control will also be on hand with free mosquito dunk kits and educational material for residents.
Keep Suffolk Beautiful organizers expressed gratitude to Florence Bowser Elementary School and a host of local partners for making the event possible. That list includes the Suffolk Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office, Suffolk Sheriff’s Office, Bay Disposal, SPSA, Suffolk Mosquito Control, Suffolk Christian Fellowship Center, the Lion’s Club, Suffolk Master Gardeners, Goodwill, Commonwealth Document Management, and the volunteers who support the effort.
For more information about the event or accepted items, residents can contact Keep Suffolk Beautiful or visit the city’s website.
