Mary Perdue has been one of the main advocates for the ForKids community fridge and pantry since its ribbon-cutting ceremony last summer. One of her latest large scale donation efforts was to organize a car cruise-in asking for donations of diapers, wipes, hygiene items, and grocery store gift cards in order to participate. The event, held on Sunday, June 22, was at Double R Ranch in Suffolk.
With a preparation time of only a few weeks, Perdue and her group of volunteers put on an afternoon event complete with around 30 cars, homemade barbeque, bounce houses, a petting zoo, and a mobile game truck.
“I’m super excited,” Perdue said at the event. “For a three week turnaround time, I think it’s super.”
Families were encouraged to come with their kids, and all kinds of vehicles were welcome. Most of the vehicles on display were classic cars, with a few newer sports cars as well.
James and Anna Lee own the Double R Ranch property and were happy to host the event.
They first got involved with the ForKids community fridge and pantry around Easter when Perdue posted about discounted hams at the grocery store.
James said they bought a few hams to donate to the fridge, and they’ve been involved ever since.
“She just randomly said, ‘one day we should have a car show or something,’” he said. “And I was like, ‘I got a place,’ and so yeah, here we are now.”
He said he was also happy with the turnout and thinks this was a good start to something that can hopefully become an annual event.
With a bit more notice next year, Perdue thinks they can host an event twice as big, and maybe host it earlier in the summer so it’s not as hot.
“If I get ready, I think it could be pretty awesome,” she said.
