Man injured in fire

A man was injured trying to rescue his mother from a house fire Monday afternoon, but it turns out the woman was at a doctor’s appointment when her home went up in flames.

The man attempted to go into the home in the 6000 block of Brookwood Drive prior to the arrival of firefighters to rescue his legally blind mother but suffered a laceration to his hand, according to a press release from the city. The fire, which was reported at 3:47 p.m., was in the College Square neighborhood.

The man was treated at the scene by emergency medical personnel and taken to the hospital by a family member. The home was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived.

One unit in the duplex had heavy fire damage, and the second unit had smoke and water damage. Three adults and two children were displaced in the unit where the fire originated, and two adults were displaced in the second unit.

All the victims are being assisted by the American Red Cross. There were no injuries to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
