A reading workshop conducted for 37 neighborhood kids in a Reno Street home this summer ended Aug. 15 with a celebration.

Workshops were held Tuesdays and Thursdays, with an average of 15 to 20 students, according to Lloyd Askew, who conducted the program.

“When considering that these children could have very well been doing other things, this provides proof that students and parents alike were interested in helping their children to improve their reading skills over the summer,” Askew said

Students earned participation certificates during the closing ceremony, along with school supplies, prizes and a cookout, and Askew thanked the parents who helped fund the ceremony, as well as the teachers and assistants who helped with the program.
