A Norfolk woman arrested in May on child abuse charges entered Alford pleas on two of the charges this week.

Donna Evette Manson, 45, was charged in relation to incidents that occurred from Sept. 1 to Oct. 10, 2013, when she lived in the 6000 block of Bradford Drive in Suffolk.

The girl had been in Manson’s custody since she was 4 years old, prosecutor Marie Walls said. She was believed to be a family member of Manson’s, but it has since been determined they are not biologically related.

“They thought they shared the same father,” Walls said.

While living with Manson, the girl was locked in her room and not permitted to leave, Walls said. The girl was forced to urinate and defecate in her room and then try to hide that she had done so.

Walls said a doctor was prepared to testify had the case gone to trial that looping marks, an open wound on her right wrist and wounds from her ankles to upper back were the result of repeated beatings.

Manson pleaded guilty to child abuse or neglect with serious injury and child cruelty. As part of the plea agreement, charges of aggravated malicious wounding, failure to seek medical attention, shoot, stab, cut or wound, child abuse or neglect and abduction were not prosecuted.

Manson faces sentencing Jan. 14.
