Classic story gets a local twist

Virginia Musical Theatre and The Governor’s School for the Arts announce the return of the all-singing, all-dancing production of Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” at the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts, Dec. 5-7.

Composed and penned by Virginia Beach locals Chip Gallagher (music) and Jeff Meredith (book and lyrics), the classic musical will be performed by a cast of 32, led by Broadway’s Gordon Stanley.

The cast also features local favorites Mike Joyner as Bob Cratchit, Garney Johnson as Jacob Marley, and Nathan Jentink as Young Scrooge. Jentink is a 2009 graduate of The Governor’s School for the Arts and is returning to the area after touring in “Junie B. Jones.” Ross Roberts will portray Tiny Tim.

This musical retelling of Dickens’ classic story of redemption and forgiveness will be directed by Gallagher, with choreography by Jeff Warner and music direction by Bart Kuebler.

Performances are Dec. 5 at 8 p.m., Dec. 6 at 2 and 8 p.m. and Dec. 7 at 2 p.m.
