The Suffolk Humane Society’s second Paws for the Arts Gala next Saturday will feature live and silent auctions with a wide variety of items for up for grabs, live entertainment, heavy hors d’oeuvres and, most importantly, raising plenty of money for the society’s work.

Despite the event’s name, it’s really the arts that are supporting the paws, said Rhonda Jones, director of events for the society.

“The art community is just phenomenal as far as supporting Suffolk Humane in our efforts,” Jones said.

The Feb. 7 event will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront, 100 E. Constance Road.

More than 20 artists have donated work for the event, and gift certificates to a wide variety of businesses are also available. Jewelry, photography packages from professional studios, NASCAR collectibles and more are up for grabs.

Experiences going to the highest bidder include a private cooking lesson for six at Harper’s Table, a pizza a week for an entire year from Amici’s, a Norfolk Tides box suite with full catering, a catered event at The Second Floor with catering by The Catering Place; an Outer Banks beach house stay, a Shenandoah River riverhouse stay and more.

In addition, for the second year, the society will raffle a guitar autographed by Luke Bryan, donated by Roger and Jason Fawcett, who are friends of the popular country singer.

Raffle tickets are $10 each and will be sold through the end of the event, when the winner will be announced.

Live entertainment will include vocalist Win Winslow as well as brothers Hamed Barbarji, a trumpeter, and Zachary Barbarji, a violinist.

The event won’t be completely dog-less, even though it’s at a hotel. Some of the group’s therapy dogs that participate in the B.A.R.K.S. (Books And Reading for Kids in Suffolk) program will be on hand to showcase some of the society’s work.

“Our therapy dogs are a huge part of our humane education program,” Jones said.

New this year, patrons can sign up to be “Pet Angels” for a $100 donation. It includes two raffle tickets for the guitar as well as a 2015 Suffolk Humane Society membership.

“Last year was such a successful inaugural event,” Jones said. “Art lovers and animal lovers can come together and support Suffolk Humane’s mission to help animals and improve our community.”

Tickets to the event are $50 and can be purchased at the door or in advance at Mike Duman Auto Sales, 2300 Godwin Blvd., and at the Suffolk Humane Society office, 4300 Nansemond Parkway, as well as online at www.suffolkhumanesociety.com.

Guitar raffle tickets also can be purchased at any of those sites, and Pet Angel sponsorships can be purchased online.
