Three people were injured in an accident Friday morning between an Isle of Wight school bus and a work truck. No students were aboard at the time of the crash.

Three adults were transported to area hospitals, two with critical injuries, after an Isle of Wight County school bus and a work truck collided in Suffolk this morning, according to city of Suffolk spokesman Tim Kelley.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue responded to the intersection of Portsmouth Boulevard and Suburban Drive after dispatchers received the call at 7:11 a.m., Kelley stated in a news release.

The bus was not carrying students, but the female driver was taken by ground ambulance to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with critical injuries, and a female bus aide was taken to Sentara Obici Hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

The work truck’s male driver, according to Kelley, was airlifted via Nightingale to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with critical injuries.

First responders treated and assessed all three patients at the scene, according to Kelley, and they were the only occupants between both vehicles.

Eastbound lanes of Portsmouth Boulevard and the intersection of Suburban Drive closed for about 1-½ hours.

The school bus, with its hood ripped off, was towed from the scene shortly after 9:30 a.m.

The accident remains under investigation, Kelley stated.
