Multiple camp opportunities abound

Now that Memorial Day is over and the days are getting longer and hotter, it’s time to start thinking about where to send the children to summer camp — if you haven’t thought about it already.

Fortunately, Suffolk has a host of summer camp options that not only will keep children occupied during the day but also will enrich their physical and mental fitness.

One such camp is the partnership between Suffolk Christian Academy and Sylvan Learning Centers, which will take place almost every week during the summer, starting on June 29 and continuing to Aug. 28.

They all focus on science, technology, engineering and math-related topics, said Sylvan Learning of Chesapeake’s owner Kim Teixeira.

She said early exposure to the so-called STEM topics is likely to encourage children pursuing those types of careers.

“I’m excited to be able to provide an opportunity to expose kids to STEM classes,” she said, quoting a study that showed there will soon be more job opportunities in STEM fields than there are students graduating to fill those jobs.

“We need to expand the pipeline for STEM,” she said. “We need to open kids up to the idea — and really open girls up to it. My objective is to take the opportunity to expose young students to STEM concepts. These are things you can have a job in — making video games or building a bridge or programming a computer.”

Topics for the camps include game design, bridge building, algebra, machines and robotics. Prices range from $175 to $250 for the weeklong camps, with discounts for multiple camps attended. Classes will be held at Westminster Reformed Presbyterian Church, 3488 Godwin Blvd.
