Police are investigating a possible sexual assault on a 23-month-old girl, according to city spokeswoman Diana Klink.

An officer responded to Sentara Obici Hospital on Wednesday and met with the mother of the girl.

“Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined that the toddler was possibly sexually assaulted by a known male juvenile, age 17,” Klink wrote in an email.

The child was transported to Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, and the investigation is ongoing, Klink said. No more information was available.
