DMV to move office

Suffolk’s DMV Customer Service Center will move to a more spacious, modern facility next week.

The new office at 1040 Centerbrooke Lane is conveniently located near U.S. Route 58, seats three times the number of people in the lobby and is designed to more efficiently serve customers, DMV spokeswoman Brandy Brubaker said.

“We needed a larger space so that we could more efficiently serve our customers,” Brubaker said.

The new office is 7,500 square feet, compared to the Holladay Street location, which is 6,100 square feet, Brubaker said. It will seat 150 in the lobby, up from only 50 on Holladay Street.

Printers at the service windows are among the many design changes that will allow customers to be served more efficiently, Brubaker said.

“It may not seem like much, but it saves them time,” she said. “When they print documents for customers, they can just reach over and grab them instead of having to go to the back to one printer for everybody. It makes them more efficient.”

Modern restrooms, extra parking and a dedicated motorcycle test area also will benefit visitors to the new facility.

“We’re excited for a nice, new, modern facility,” Brubaker said.

Even though Virginia drivers can do more than 40 types of DMV transactions online, the customer service centers continue to see a lot of business, Brubaker said. For the week beginning Sept. 21, the Hampton District, which includes Suffolk, had almost 6,500 customers, she said.

“Lots of people still come in to see us,” Brubaker said. “It’s for customers that want to come in to DMV because they just like doing their business in person, or maybe they have a transaction they can’t do online.”

The current customer service center on Holladay Street will close at 5 p.m. Wednesday. A DMV 2 Go mobile customer service center will be set up in the parking lot there during the normal business hours on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. It can conduct the same transactions as a full-service office.

The new office will open on Oct. 13.
