Player of the week nominations

Following are this week’s nominees for the Duke Automotive-Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week:

Shannon Leonard, senior for Lakeland High School field hockey: She recorded the winning goals in both of the Lady Cavaliers’ games this past week. On Friday, she scored with 8:54 remaining in overtime to give her team a 3-2 home win over Smithfield High School. On Thursday, her goal with 24:12 to go in the second half led to her team’s 2-1 victory over host and conference rival York High School.

Elvie Sellers, junior for Nansemond-Suffolk Academy tennis: She was undefeated in No. 1 singles play this week, helping her team go 3-0, a run which included a 5-4 team win on Wednesday over host and defending state champion Hampton Roads Academy. In that match, she defeated Lady Navigators star Joyce Fields in singles, 7-5, 6-3, then she teamed with Ria Khandpur to win No. 1 doubles, 8-4.

Hannah O’Neal, junior for King’s Fork High School field hockey: She was key as a goalkeeper to helping her team achieve a 1-0 overtime victory against visiting Deep Creek High School on Wednesday, stopping the Lady Hornets from scoring on a stroke. Though her team lost 7-0 to visiting Great Bridge High School on Thursday, she still was strong, weathering 34 shots on goal and stopping another stroke.

Kiere Landry, senior for Nansemond River High School football: He put together an outstanding performance at quarterback on Friday to help give his team a 39-0 homecoming night victory against visiting Great Bridge High School at the end of an exhausting run of three games in eight days. Against the Wildcats, he went 15-for-23 passing for 278 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.
