Discarded smoking material has been determined as the cause of a fire on Saturday evening that damaged a home in the 100 block of Tee Box Lane.

Suffolk Fire and Rescue personnel were called to the fire at 6:04 p.m., and when they arrived two minutes later, they found heavy smoke and flames coming from a garage attached to the residence, according to a city spokesman.

The fire was contained to the garage and was marked under control at 6:49 p.m., Suffolk spokesman Tim Kelley stated in an email.

Seven occupants of the home — two adults and five children — were displaced by the fire and are receiving help from relatives, Kelley stated. There were no injuries.

The initial investigation revealed that the fire had been caused by “discarded smoking material,” Kelley stated. Damage to the garage and its contents was estimated at $15,000.
