Elder James Sherrod

Elder James H. Sherrod, 86, of 617 Madison Avenue died April 22, 2010 at his residence. He was the son of the late James Sherrod and Flossie Barlow/Annie Sherrod. He was also predeceased by his wife, Frances Juanita Copeland Sherrod.
Elder Sherrod retired after 42 years as an air condition and refrigeration mechanic at Planters Peanut Company. He was a World War II veteran. He was a member of Lakeview Baptist Church, where he was the Assistant Pastor, Chairman of the Deacon Board, member of the Men’s Fellowship and Sunday School teacher. He was a prison minister and a chaplain at Sentara Obici Hospital.
He leaves to cherish his memory six daughters, Mary A. Slade (James), Gloria Lassiter (Richard), Mary F. Whitley (William) and Thelma Brown, all of Chesapeake, Bernice Dumas (Robert, “Bob”) of Virginia Beach and Pastor Miriam S. Copeland (Randolph, “Randy”) of Suffolk; four sons, Elder Bernell Sherrod (Denise), James Sherrod, Jr (Marion), Samuel L. Sherrod (Linda), all of Suffolk, and Prescott Sherrod (Natashcha) of Virginia Beach; 18 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; one sister, Mamie Anthony of Watersbury, Conn.; sister-in-law, Gloria Jean Smith of Suffolk; brothers-in-law, Bishop Clearance Copeland (Cora) of Suffolk and William L. Copeland (Gayle) of Reading, Pa. and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. April 27 in New Mount Joy Food for Living Ministries, officiated by Pastor Miriam S. Copeland and Elder Bernell Sherrod. Interment will be in Carver Memorial Cemetery. Crocker Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
