School board meeting set for tonight

The Suffolk School Board has a number of interesting issues on its plate this evening, ranging from discussing school dress codes and this year’s graduation to dedicating Hillpoint Elementary School and reviewing the division’s Adequate Yearly Progress numbers.

The board’s work session will begin at 4:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers, 441 Market St. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m. following a closed meeting.

The discussion on the dress code stems from board member Sharon Harris’ request at last month’s meeting that it be reviewed.

“I am not pleased,” Harris said at the August meeting. She said she didn’t think the dress code was being enforced properly at some schools.

The student code of conduct in the student handbook reads: “A student’s dress and appearance shall be such that it does not cause disruption, distract others from the educational process or create a health or safety problem. Students must comply with specific building dress regulations of which students will be given prior notice.” Violation of the dress code could lead to disciplinary action, according to the code.

On the agenda for the regular meeting, board members will discuss this year’s Adequate Yearly Progress numbers. The statistics, released last month, were not encouraging for Suffolk Public Schools. The division and 12 of its 20 schools that were scored last year did not make AYP.

The board also will continue its discussion on the agenda for graduation. The board was prepared to vote on the issue of the graduation locations during last month’s work session, but held off a decision until they could hear the opinion of a speaker at the meeting. The board also will discuss the program, time and dates for graduations.
