King’s Fork (1-2, 0-2) at Nansemond River (1-2, 0-2) – 7 p.m.
Last meeting – King’s Fork 14-12
King’s Fork has won its last two meetings against the Warriors after Nansemond River won the first two games in the cross-city series in 2004 and 2005.
The Bulldogs come off a 28-7 loss against Western Branch last Friday. Western Branch led 14-0 after four plays from scrimmage. For the second straight week, the Bulldogs fell behind early as an opponent hit big plays, and for the second straight week, the last three quarters were mostly even, which wasn’t enough for King’s Fork.
Nansemond River earned its first win last Friday by beating Wilson 14-12 at Arrowhead Stadium. Freshman running back Lamont Brown led NR’s offense with 16 carries and 97 yards.
Last September at King’s Fork, the Bulldogs ran for more than 200 yards while holding the Warriors to 38 rushing yards. Nansemond River recovered six Bulldog fumbles to stay in the game.
Grassfield (3-0, 2-0) at Lakeland (1-2, 1-1) – 7 p.m.
Last meeting – Lakeland 14-2
Grassfield is looking to remain undefeated and go to 2-0 against Suffolk schools this season after an easy win against Nansemond River in the opening week. The Cavaliers have a chance to go to 2-1 in the Southeastern District and put themselves into the playoff discussion.
Lakeland’s defense is among the best in the region’s Group AAA schools in yards allowed. Grassfield’s defense is among the leaders in points allowed (13 in three games).
Cedric Johnson rushed for 124 yards on only 11 carries and scored his fourth touchdown of the year last week in Lakeland’s 8-7 loss to Maury.
