Stanley Chapman

Stanley “Hobo” Lewis Chapman, 81, of the 800 block of Garfield Avenue, Suffolk, passed away Sept. 27, 2008 at his residence. He was a native of Nansemond County and son of the late Moses Junius Chapman and Mary Elizabeth Small. He was also preceded in death by two daughters, Jacqueline Eloise Chapman and Floria Diane Beale.
He attended Suffolk Public Schools and was retired from the Peanut City Iron Works. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he trained as a fire fighter.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Lillian Chapman, of Suffolk; five daughters, Mary Harrell (Lyn), of Portsmouth, Sereta Hoggard (Elmer), of Gates, N.C., Ella Williams (Benny), and Bettie Joe James, both of Jersey City, N.J. and Brenda Sykes, of Portsmouth; two sons, Edward L. Nichols, of Brooklyn, N.Y. and Robert L. Smith (Sabrina), of Norfolk; two sisters, Kita Ann Taylor, of Norfolk, and Georgia Mae Robinson, of Seattle, Wash.; brother, Clyde Chapman (Daisy), of Suffolk; 38 grandchildren, 88 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008 at Crocker Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery. The family will be at 512 Warwick St., Suffolk. Condolences may be extended to the family at www.crockerfuneralhome.com.
