CHESAPEAKE — The Nansemond River Warriors and Lakeland Cavaliers cross country teams competed in separate meets on Tuesday afternoon at Bells Mill Park.
Nansemond River competed first, in hopes of their first win of the season against Deep Creek and Oscar Smith.
The Warriors took second place overall in the race, beating out Deep Creek and finishing behind Oscar Smith.
Clay Bonney was the Warriors’ top runner, finishing second overall, one of the top finishes in school history, with a time of 20:02.
“It felt good, but I could’ve kicked harder at the end of the race,” said Bonney after he finished.
Shaquille Howard came in closely behind Bonney with a time of 20:09, to take fourth place overall. The meet was the first time the Warriors had two top five finishers in one race.
“I ran alright, if I had ran better, we would’ve won,” Howard said of his performance in the race.
The Lakeland Cavaliers ran in the second meet of the day against top district competitors Western Branch and Great Bridge. Western Branch took first in the meet, followed by Great Bridge and Lakeland.
The Cavaliers’ top runner was Daniel Jones with a time of 19:50 to take 31st overall.
“I did really good, and we did really good as a team,” said Jones after the race. Jones’ time was a personal record.
The Cavaliers and Warriors compete versus each other next Tuesday at Bells Mill Park.
