A regional hazardous material cleanup team is investigating an accident that happened around 3:45 p.m. on the Monitor-Merrimac Bridge Tunnel.

Police from Suffolk, Newport News, and Portsmouth, as well as the Virginia State Police, have responded to the two-vehicle accident that has closed at least one southbound lane on the Suffolk side of the span, said city spokeswoman Debbie George. Three people were injured in the accident.

George was unsure what the truck was transporting or how severely anyone was injured, saying around 4:30 p.m. that details of the accident were sketchy.
