The Saints held the Gators (0-8, 0-7) to three first downs and 30 yards on offense for the shutout on Friday at Nansemond-Suffolk.
NSA forced three interceptions, among which was Isaac Ballou’s 56-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Saints and Gators combined for 15 fumbles, although only one, an NSA fumble, was recovered by the opposing team.
A 2-yard touchdown run by J.R. Crowder, Ballou’s touchdown, and a 64-yard touchdown run by Kenny Rice built a 20-0 halftime lead. A safety on a tackle by Josh Todd and Scott Guter’s 27-yard field goal completed the scoring. Rice finished with 117 rushing yards. Crowder had 100 rushing yards.
NSA (4-4, 3-1) hosts Blue Ridge on Friday night at 7 p.m. Going into this past week’s schedule, Blue Ridge was fourth and NSA was fifth in the Virginia Independent Schools Division II ratings. The top four schools make the state playoffs.
Oscar Smith 40, Nansemond River 6
Led by four rushing touchdowns by Virginia-bound Perry Jones, Oscar Smith rolled up a 40-0 halftime lead at Nansemond River on Friday night.
Freshman Lamont Brown scored on an 8-yard touchdown run in the third quarter for Nansemond River’s one touchdown. Brown finished with 15 carries for 69 yards. The Tigers (8-0, 7-0) held the Warriors to 3-for-11 passing for two yards.
Nansemond River (1-7, 0-7) plays at Hickory on Friday at 7 p.m.
