ODU field hockey advances in CAA tourney

Old Dominion rolled to a 5-1 victory over Towson in the first round of the Colonial Athletic Association Field Hockey Tournament on Thursday night at the U.S. Field Hockey National Training Center in Virginia Beach.

Senior Katelyn Smither (Lakeland) had a goal and an assist for the Lady Monarchs, both coming as ODU built a 3-0 lead in the first half. Smither converted on a penalty stroke about 20 minutes into the match, making it 2-0 ODU at that point. The goal was Smither’s 10th of the season, which leads ODU (9-12).

Old Dominion, the No. 3 seed in the conference, advances to play No. 2 Drexel on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in Virginia Beach. Also in Thursday’s first round, No. 4 William and Mary defeated No. 5 Hofstra 2-1, meaning William and Mary will face No. 1 James Madison in Saturday’s first semifinal match at noon. JMU’s roster includes three former Lady Cavalier players, Kelsey Cutchins, Lindsay Cutchins and Courtney Parmeter.
