Former Cav, Warrior on track for HU, VMI

A week after winning the 60-meter hurdles and long jump at the Navy Invitational Track and Field Meet, Hampton sophomore Predist Walker (Lakeland) added another individual title on the young track season by winning the 60-meter hurdles at the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lid Lifter on Dec. 12.

Walker won in a time of 7.97 seconds. Walker placed third in the long jump (7.20 meters), fifth in the 60-meter dash (6.93) and seventh in the 200-meter dash (22.93) at the meet in Princess Anne, Md.

Virginia Military opened its winter track season Dec. 5-6 at Kent State’s Golden Flash Gala in Kent, Ohio. Sophomore Jared Balsor (Nansemond River) won the 500-meter run and qualified for the IC4A Championships in March with a time of 1:04.79. Balsor placed 10th of 63 competitors in the 200 meters (22.68).

Virginia Wesleyan beat Apprentice 84-71 on Monday in Virginia Beach. The Marlins were led by freshman forward Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) who scored 31 points. McDuffie made 13 of 19 field goals and 5 of 6 free throws and grabbed seven rebounds.

The Builders (6-4) were led by junior Eric Joe (Nansemond River) who had 16 points. Eric Ruffin (Lakeland) and Fred Spratley (Nansemond River) had 14 points and 13 points respectively for Apprentice.

McDuffie has led VWC (5-5) in scoring in five of 10 games so far this season. McDuffie’s averaging 15.3 points and 5.8 rebounds per game.

Averett freshman Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) was named Rookie of the Week in the USA South Conference for the third time this season for his play in two Averett games at a tournament at Messiah College in Grantham, Pa. The Cougars (5-3) lost 87-76 to Montclair St. and defeated Messiah 72-55.

For the season, Hart is averaging 11.8 points per game, shooting 42.9 percent (15 of 35) from three-point range and averaging 5.9 rebounds per game.

Two former Nansemond-Suffolk swimmers, sophomores Brandon Wilder and Ryan Hanson, helped Washington and Lee take the team championship Friday-Monday at the Finis Collegiate Invitational at California Lutheran University. The Generals placed first out of 10 schools.

Wilder placed eighth of 38 in the 200-yard butterfly (2:02.44), 13th of 37 in the 100 butterfly (54.57) and 16th of 30 in the 500 freestyle (5:05.92). Hanson was 10th of 33 in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.41) and 15th of 38 in the 200 backstroke (2:06.26).

Washington and Lee is 7-0 in dual meets this season.
