On campus: ODU, Wright get better of Winthrop, Jones

Old Dominion’s men’s basketball team won its fifth straight game on Saturday night, 66-54 against Winthrop (1-8).

Freshman Andre Jones (Nansemond River) got his second start of the season for Winthrop. Jones played a team-high 36 minutes and scored a team-high 13 points.

ODU led 54-52 before outscoring Winthrop 12-2 over the final 2:33. Jones’ high school teammate, Nick Wright, is a freshman for the Monarchs.

The Monarchs (6-3, 1-0 Colonial) played Maryland-Eastern Shore in Norfolk on Monday night and host Winston-Salem State on Dec. 30 before getting into the bulk of their conference season. The Eagles (1-8, 0-2 Big South) hosted College of Charleston on Monday, then face Florida in Sunrise, Fla. on Dec. 28.

Chowan’s men’s basketball team won its fourth straight game on Saturday, defeating Cheney 81-75 in Murfreesboro, N.C.

Sophomore Mark Brown (Nansemond River) had a career-high scoring game with 18 points, along with getting four rebounds and three assists. Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) added 12 points.

Chowan (6-5) is now off until Jan. 3 and a home game against Columbia Union.

Hampton University sophomore Predist Walker (Lakeland) was named MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for his performance on Friday, Dec. 12 at the Maryland-Eastern Shore Lid Lifter meet.

Walker competed in four events, won the 60-meter hurdles (7.97 seconds) and placed in the top 10 in all four events. Walker was third in the long jump (7.20 meters), fifth in 60-meter dash and seventh in the 200-meter dash.
