Lady Warriors finish 6th in Myrtle Beach

Nansemond River came out on different sides of two close games on Monday and Tuesday to close out its trip to Myrtle Beach and the Crescent Bank Invitational.

After winning Thursday and losing Friday, the Lady Warriors defeated Orangeburg-Wilkinson (SC) 62-59 on Monday.

Tanisha Brown’s three-pointer made it a 41-41 score and a lay-up by Trinese Fox put NR ahead 43-41 with 11:16 remaining in the game. (Games were played in 16-minute halves at the tournament.)

The Lady Warriors held on to a narrow lead the rest of the way. A pair of successful free throws by Andrea Jones gave NR a 62-59 lead with six seconds left. Jones finished with 29 points (10 of 17 field goals, 8 of 8 free throws) and seven steals.

Fox had 12 points and three assists. DeShanna Honore’ had 12 points, seven rebounds and four steals for NR.

Monday’s victory placed the Lady Warriors into the fifth-place game on the last day of the tournament. Parkway Academy (FL) defeated Nansemond River 54-45. Parkway Academy improves to 17-1 on the season. The Lady Warriors are 6-3 overall, 4-1 in the Southeastern District.

Parkway led or was tied the whole way after gaining a 4-2 lead, but Parkway never gained a double-digit lead.

Brittany Boyd’s lay-up with 2:33 remaining in the game cut Parkway’s lead to 46-43, but that was as close as NR got.

Fox and Honore’ led the Lady Warriors with 12 points each. Fox had nine assists and Honore’ had six rebounds.

Nansemond River returns to district play on Tuesday, Jan. 6 with a contest at Hickory.
