A five-hour standoff that began late on Christmas Eve ended with a 25-year-old man surrendering to police.
Michael Anthony Smith, 25, was taken into custody on charges of robbery, attempted robbery and firearms charges about 5:45 a.m. Thursday.
The incident began about 11:30 p.m. Christmas Eve, as two people were leaving a Christmas party on Battery Avenue. As they left, a man approached and asked to speak with them.
The man allegedly drew a gun, robbed the two of $150 to $175, and left in a black pickup truck with a broken window.
About an hour and a half later, a police officer on patrol noticed a similar truck outside a home on York Street, a few blocks away from the robbery. After interviewing the resident, they found that the man was in a bedroom of the home.
Police got the residents out of the home and called the department’s Critical Incident Response Team, which eventually managed to talk Smith out of the home at 5:45 a.m.
