Five minor accidents in Suffolk on Saturday morning were attributed to black ice and resulted in temporary closures of affected roads in widely spaced areas of the city.

Roads were closed on Godwin Boulevard at Route 58, on the northbound lane at the 3600 block of Bridge Road, on Godwin Boulevard at the Reids Ferry Bridge and at the on-ramp to Route 58 at Pitchkettle Road, police said in a statement released Saturday morning.

They urged caution, especially on bridges and overpasses throughout the city.

Temperatures had dropped to 30 degrees in the early morning hours on Sataurday, according to the National Weather Service, and fog and mist covered much of the area, coating some roads with a layer of slick, unseen ice.

By mid-afternoon, the temperature downtown reached its high of 54 degrees, with clear skies all around.

The weather service was predicting somewhat warmer temperatures through the night Saturday and into Sunday morning, with lows in the mid 30s, followed by a high temperature in the low 50s on Sunday afternoon.

Clouds were projected to increase through the night, and Sunday is expected to bring a 50-percent chance of rain, though no significant totals were predicted.
