On Campus: Former Warrior hits game-winning shot for Winthrop

Winthrop freshman Andre Jones (Nansemond River) hit a game-winning three-point shot for the Eagles on Saturday as Winthrop nipped Presbyterian 54-53 in overtime.

Jones’ shot came with 0:16 left in overtime. Jones matched his career-high in scoring with 13 points. The 6-foot-2 shooting guard is averaging 5.7 points per game in 21.1 minutes per game in Winthrop’s 14 games (3-11 overall, 2-3 Big South).

Chowan and Apprentice met in a local rivalry on Tuesday night in Newport News. The Hawks prevailed over the Builders 74-70 for Chowan’s eighth win in its last 10 games.

Freshman Mark Brown (Nansemond River) had his second straight good all-around game for the Hawks with 14 points, eight rebounds, five assists, four blocks and three steals. On Saturday in a 69-63 loss to Virginia Union, Brown had 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. Jaleel Nelson (Lakeland) added eight points and six assists for Chowan at Apprentice.

For the Builders, senior Eric Ruffin (Lakeland) scored a team-high 20 points and had seven rebounds and six assists. Eric Joe (Nansemond River) added nine points and Fred Spratley (Nansemond River) had seven points.

Chowan is 8-6 overall. Apprentice is 7-9 overall.

Nansemond River grad Quinton McDuffie was named Virginia Wesleyan’s Male Athlete of the Week for his performance in the Marlins’ 71-70 win against Washington and Lee on Saturday in Virginia Beach. The win was VWC’s (9-5, 3-2 ODAC) sixth straight win.

McDuffie, a freshman power forward, had 12 points and a VWC rookie record 20 rebounds. Eighteen of McDuffie’s 20 boards came on the defensive end. McDuffie’s total was the most rebounds in a game for a Marlin since 1981.

For the season, McDuffie has made 12 starts, averaging 13.8 points per game, 6.9 rebounds per game and 56.6 percent field goal shooting.

On track

Hampton sophomore Predist Walker (Lakeland) recorded two more top finishes this indoor track season at the Virginia Tech Invitational on Jan. 10-11.

Walker finished third of 17 hurdlers in the 60-meter hurdles (7.90 seconds) and sixth of 18 competitors in the long jump (23-feet-0.5).

Walker’s track season has already included individual victories in events at the Navy Invitational and at a meet at Maryland-Eastern Shore and being named MEAC Men’s Track Athlete of the Week.
