Award winners
Winthrop freshman Andre Jones (Nansemond River) was the Big South Conference Freshman of the Week for Jan. 19-25. Jones scored 15 points in a Winthrop (5-13, 4-5) win over Charleston Southern, then a career-high 21 points at Coastal Carolina.
Jones made 4 of 7 three-point shots in the Coastal Carolina game. The 6-foot-2 guard shot 58.3 percent from the field in the two games.
Averett freshman Kenny Hart (Nansemond River) was the USA South’s Conference Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season for the week ending Jan. 26.
In three games Hart averaged 14.3 points and 5.7 rebounds a game. Hart scored a career-high 25 points in Averett’s win against Shenandoah. Averett is 10-8 overall, 3-2 in the USA South.

Apprentice School’s women’s basketball team ran its winning streak to five games with wins over Chowan, 55-41, on Thursday, and vs. Allen, 70-43, on Monday. Shameka Warren (Nansemond River), Le’Cetra Arrington (Nansemond River) and Natarsha Whitworth (Lakeland) are on the Lady Builder (9-9) roster.
Chowan rebounded from the loss in Newport News by beating Allen 70-35 on Sunday in Murfreesboro, N.C.
Freshman guard Ransheda Jennings (King’s Fork) led Chowan with 14 points. Jennings has led Chowan in scoring in five games this season.
After a loss at Fayetteville State on Monday, Chowan is 6-15 overall.
Christopher Newport is 4-0 in the USA South (11-6 overall) after an 82-73 win against Ferrum on Sunday in Newport News. CNU’s roster includes Kenny Reid (Lakeland) and Loren Farris (King’s Fork).
Virginia Wesleyan’s men’s basketball team knocked off the top two teams in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference in back-to-back games by beating Randolph-Macon 82-76, then Roanoke 82-64.
In the game against RMC, freshman Quinton McDuffie (Nansemond River) recorded 17 points and 18 rebounds for the Marlins (11-7, 5-4). McDuffie is averaging 13.2 points and 7.1 rebounds per game for the year.
