Suffolk fire marshals and police detectives are investigating a fire that occurred early Wednesday morning, causing an estimated $500,000 in damage to four of the city’s trash trucks.

Just before 2 a.m., a citizen notified a patrolling police officer that several vehicles were on fire in the parking lot of the Public Works Operation Center, located on the 200 block of Chestnut Street, according to a city press release.

When police arrived at the scene, they found that several trash trucks parked inside the fenced and gated area were on fire. Suffolk Fire and Rescue arrived and extinguished the fires.
