Andrea Jones surpassed the 1,000-point mark for her high school career on Tuesday night when she scored 19 points versus Hickory in a 61-21 rout by the Lady Warriors. Jones is just the third Lady Warrior to reach the 1,000-point mark for her career.

The game was stopped with 0:05 remaining in the third quarter after Jones scored on a fastbreak layup to give her 19 points.

“I was surprised because they stopped the game and everybody knew except for me,” an emotional Jones said after the game.

Jones was the highlight of a somewhat quiet night for the high-octane Lady Warriors. They looked like the team people are used to seeing in the first quarter when all but two of their field goals were via transition.

Deshanna Honare` crossed over on the catch and layed the ball in with 6:10 to play in the second quarter to put the Lady Warriors up 23-7. Trinese Fox followed on the following play, weaving through the Hawk defenders to lay the ball in, forcing Hickory to call a timeout.

A Jones runner with 3:52 left in the second period gave Nansemond River a 29-7 lead. The Lady Warriors led 31-9 at the half, a low score for their up-tempo offense. It was their defense that resulted in the wide margin.

“We really didn’t press as much as we normally do,” Lady Warriors coach R. Calvin Mason said, “we tried to work on a lot of our half-court defenses, we just have some small things to work out.”

The Lady Warriors poured in 22 points in the third including Jones’ 1000th.

“I’m really proud of Andrea and I’m honored to have had her for the past few years,” Mason said. “She’s had to overcome a lot and it’s a testimony to the hard work that she’s put in.”

Jones led the Warriors with 19 points and seven rebounds. Trinese Fox also chipped in 15 points and four rebounds. Brittany Boyd patrolled the lane with eight blocks.

The Lady Warriors (16-4, 14-2) will next be in action on Thursday against intra-city rival Lakeland.
