Burgess Selby

CHESTERFIELD – The Rev. Burgess Grey Selby, 87, formerly of Suffolk, went to be with the Lord on Feb. 18, 2009. He was born in Burgess Store, Va., on Nov. 19, 1921, to the late Samuel C. and Sadie M. Selby. He served his country in the U.S. Army and Air Force during World War II. Burgess became a Methodist minister and retired after 35 years of ministry throughout Virginia. He was predeceased by his loving wife of 60 years, Betty Selby.
Left to cherish his memory are six children, Alice Horton and husband Bob, of Charlottesville, Va.,, Samuel Selby, of Emporia, Va., Luther Selby, of Gasburg, Va., Parker Selby, of Alexandria, Va., Roy Selby, of Emporia, Va., Marian Selby and husband, Doug Harris, of Quinton, Va.; two brothers, Thomas Selby, of Alexandria, Va., and Fred Selby and wife, June, of Bryantown, Md.; four grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009 at Providence United Methodist Church, Suffolk, Va., conducted by Pastor Lisa Blackmonson. Burial will follow in Nansemond-Suffolk Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Harrell & Hill Funeral Home, Suffolk, Va., on Saturday, Feb. 21 from 3 to 5 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Providence UMC.
