On campus: Lady Cav pitcher gets win

Mount Olive freshman Sarah Saunders (Lakeland) pitched a complete game to lead Mt. Olive to a 6-1 win at Chowan on Thursday as part of a doubleheader sweep for the Trojans. Saunders allowed seven hits while striking out six. Saunders added a hit and an RBI for the Trojan offense.

It was the first start of the season by Saunders, who’s allowed two earned runs in 8.1 innings pitched (1.73 ERA). Katie Devenuto (Lakeland) is also a freshman on the Mt. Olive team. Mindy Byrd (King’s Fork) is a sophomore for Chowan. Chowan is 12-6 overall. Mt. Olive is 6-3-1.

Mount Olive travels to Orlando, Fla. and will play 10 games in five days in Florida starting on Sunday.

Christopher Newport senior Lindsay Kelly (Lakeland) pitched a complete-game shutout in game one of a doubleheader sweep for CNU over Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday in Newport News. CNU and Kelly won game one 5-0 and the Captains took game two 8-4.

Kelly allowed three hits and struck out eight in seven innings. Kelly is 2-0 for the season. CNU is 4-0 overall. CNU plays at Bridgewater on Sunday.

Boston College’s baseball team played the Boston Red Sox in a Spring Training exhibition game for the Red Sox on Wednesday in Fort Myers, Fla.

BC led 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Red Sox scored six runs. Boston went on to a 7-1 win.

Josh Beckett started and pitched two perfect innings for the Red Sox. David Ortiz, J.D. Drew and Rocco Baldelli were in the starting lineup.

Sophomore Matt Hamlet (Nansemond-Suffolk) started at second base and went 0 for 1 at the plate for the Eagles.

BC (5-0) plays six more games in Fort Myers before traveling north to face ACC foe Florida St. in a three-game series. In all BC plays 21 road games to open the season between Feb. 20 and Mar. 25.
