One man is dead after a fire Tuesday night consumed a camper trailer and spread to an adjacent house.

Neighbors in the 8700 block of Pineview Road called 911 just before 10 p.m., saying they had heard an explosion and a trailer was on fire.

By the time firefighters from Holland, Whaleyville and downtown arrived, the 30-foot camper was engulfed in flames, and the fire had spread to a nearby residence. Two people in the house were able to escape unharmed, according to a city press release.

Once the fire was contained, firefighters discovered the dead body of a male in the camper. An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning, but a cause of death still has to be determined.

There was a male living in the trailer, said city spokeswoman Debbie George. However, officials cannot be sure he is the victim until they can get a positive identification.

An investigation into the cause of the fire continues. Damage is estimated at $128,000.
