Joyce Mauck

Joyce Jackson Mauck, 91, died on April 6, 2009, in Suffolk.
Born in Bath County, Va., she was the only child of Recie May and Harry Jackson. She and her parents moved to Suffolk when Joyce was 12.
Mrs. Mauck was a graduate of Suffolk High School. She went on the graduate from the College of William and Mary, where she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. She returned to Suffolk and taught school at Cypress Chapel High School, Suffolk High School, and finally Nansemond-Suffolk Academy before retiring in 1981. In her retirement, she enjoyed volunteering at the hospital and playing bridge. Mrs. Mauck was a faithful member of West End Baptist Church, having served by teaching the Friendship Sunday School Class for many years. She also served as a deacon at West End Baptist and later became a deacon emeritus of the church.
Besides her parents, Mrs. Mauck was preceded in death by her only son, William Jackson Mauck. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Robert Mauck, of Suffolk; her older daughter, Becky Winders, of Durham, N.C., and her younger daughter, Jean Mauck, of Suffolk; her grandsons, Jacob Winders, of Durham, and Dr. Ben Winders and his wife, Erika, of Baltimore, Md.
Funeral services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in West End Baptist Church by the Rev. T. Floyd Irby followed by burial in Holly Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory Thursday from 5:30 to 7 p.m. and requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Memorial Trust of West End Baptist Church, 501 W. Washington St., Suffolk, VA, 23434. The family also wishes to thank the staff at Nansemond Pointe Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center and Sentara Obici Memorial Hospital for their loving care and support.
