‘From Allmans to ZZ’

People driving past Randzz Pub on U.S. Route 58 on Friday likely weren’t surprised to hear classic rock sounds blasting from the bar, frequented by bikers and pool players alike.

However, they might have been surprised to learn what those inside already knew — the music was coming from a live band.

The Sam Floyd Band, made up of four local 40- and 50-somethings, plays regularly at Randzz, as well as other local haunts Baron’s, Shuckers, Townpoint Pub and the Harbourside Restaurant and Marina. The friends have played together on and off for years, but only made it official about three years ago.

“We got together to jam and had a good time,” said guitarist John Hall. “We decided to take it on the road.”

The band played at the Holland Founders’ Day a few years ago, and ever since has received calls to play at parties, benefits, Driver Days, and restaurants around Hampton Roads.

“We like to play up-close-and-personal type of places,” said guitarist David Buntz. “We want to play for individuals in lieu of for a crowd.”

The band has composed some original songs but doesn’t perform them in public. Instead, the Sam Floyd Band plays dozens of songs from the classic rock era – everything “from Allman Brothers to ZZ Top,” Buntz said.

“We’re having enough fun doing covers, and it’s satisfying everybody,” Hall said.

The band has dredged up some obscure songs and old favorites that people still recognize, said drummer Sam Morgan.

“There’s really no album bands anymore,” said guitarist Tim Daniel. The band also uses regional favorites to fill out its playlist.

The band members say their secret to success is to have fun and be comfortable with each other.

“We all have jobs,” Morgan said. “We’re not out here trying to make money … we do not take ourselves very seriously, but we do take our music seriously.”

Other band members agreed.

“We’re very comfortable with each other as far as musicality,” Buntz said. “We’re not young fellows, but we don’t care.”

The Sam Floyd Band will next play at Bennett’s Creek Marina on April 18.
