The Nansemond River High boys soccer team’s hopes of reaching the Southeastern District’s postseason tournament took a hit Thursday with a 4-0 loss to visiting Grassfield during its home finale.
Ten Warriors players were honored before the game on Senior Night, but it didn’t take long for the Grizzlies to put a damper on the festive mood.
Quinn Harris opened the scoring in the 12th minute when he ran on to a pass from the right wing and tipped the ball past charging goalkeeper Daryl Washington. Grassfield doubled its lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half. The ball deflected off a Nansemond River defender and directly to Jamie Robinson, who scored from five yards.
Harris scored again two minutes into the second half, this time volleying a Robinson cross out of midair and past Washington. The Grizzlies closed the scoring several minutes later when Sam Bartel fired a low shot inside the near post off a corner kick.
Nansemond River dropped to 5-6 overall and 3-3 in district play while Grassfield improved to 4-2 in district competition. Both teams, along with Great Bridge, had entered Thursday tied for fourth place. The top four teams in regular season play qualify for the district tournament.
