A 10-year-old girl was dragged by a car when it slipped into gear while running on Sunday, resulting in severe abrasions to both of her knees.

The incident took place just before 9 a.m. Sunday in the 800 block of Kilby Avenue, according to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George.

According to police reports, the girl had gotten into the vehicle, which was parked but running, and accidentally knocked it into gear while trying to unlock the passenger-side door.

The girl fell out of the vehicle, and her feet became lodged under the left front tire, causing her to be dragged down the driveway.

George said in a press release that the girl was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital, where she was treated and released.

The accident remains under investigation.
