Alice Blumenson

Alice Kaplowitz Blumenson, 80, of Ashford Drive, Suffolk, and Aventura, Fla., passed away June 10, 2009 at home in Suffolk after a short illness.
Mrs. Blumenson was born in Bronx, N.Y. to the late Sarah and Meyer Kaplowitz. She was preceded in death by her sister, Barbara Goldstein.
After a short career as a legal secretary, Mrs. Blumenson devoted her years to homemaking and raising her children in Brooklyn, N.Y. and Livingston, N.J. Once her children were grown, she was a co-proprietor with her husband of The Essex Shoe Company. She relocated to Suffolk 18 years ago to be near and assist in nurturing her beloved grandson. She was a lifetime member of Hadassah as well as a member of ORT and the National Council of Jewish Women. She was an active member of Congregation Beth El in Norfolk and a former member of Temple Beth Shalom in Livingston, N.J. She devoted her later years to assisting friends who were less able to care for their own needs.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Norman Blumenson, her daughters, Randi Blumenson and husband Daniel Mussatti, of Suffolk, Gail Blumenson Reisman and her husband Adam Reisman, of Washington, D.C., two grandsons, Scott Mussatti, of Suffolk and Eli Reisman, of Washington, D.C., two step-grandsons, Danny Mussatti and his wife Rose, of Oregon, and Stevan Mussatti and his wife, Brittany, of Oregon and five great-grandchildren, Tristan, Justin, McKenzie, Taylor and Addison Mussatti. The family gives great thanks to Dr. Jeffrey Forman for his care during her illness as well as to the staff of SeniorCorp.
The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. immediately before the service on Friday June 12, 2009 at 11 a.m. at R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home & Crematory, 509 W. Washington Street, Suffolk, Va. Rabbi Arthur Steinberg will officiate. Burial will follow at Olive Branch Cemetery in Portsmouth. In keeping with Jewish tradition, the family asks that no flowers be sent. The family will sit Shiva at the home of Dan Mussatti and Randi Blumenson.
