New commission much like the old one

The members of a new eight-member planning commission were announced Wednesday night, but they’re hardly new faces to the planning body.

Howard Benton, William Goodman, Sylvester Jones, Ritchie Jordan, William Perry, James R. “Ronnie” Rountree, Thomas Savage and Arthur Singleton will sit on the newly reconfigured commission following their appointment by the City Council on Wednesday.

All eight are returnees from the old 14-member commission, which held its last meeting Tuesday. The old commission will be abolished as of the last day of this month, and the new commission takes office July 1. Its first meeting will be July 21.

Council made the move in February to make all of the city’s boards and commissions reflective of the makeup of council. For some of the boards with 14 members, that meant reducing the number to eight. For others, which had seven — one for each borough — that meant adding an at-large member appointed by the mayor.
