Nansemond River graduate Dennis Conley was signed by the New York Jets on Saturday. Conley, an offensive lineman, was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Chicago Bears in April and waived by Chicago on July 31.
Conley played for four seasons at Hampton University where he was an All-MEAC (Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) guard twice. Conley, listed at 6-foot-2, 300 pounds by the Jets, played 37 games for Hampton; 30 at left guard.
In high school, Conley was a three-sport star for the Warriors. Conley was a four-year varsity letterman, primarily at tight end, on the football team. Conley was All-Southeastern District in football, basketball and baseball.
The Jets have two-a-day practices Monday-Thursday this week, single practices on Friday and Saturday, then their second preseason game on Monday at 8 p.m. at Baltimore on ESPN.
NFL teams must cut rosters down to 65 players after their third preseason game and to 53 players by the start of the regular season. The Jets currently have 80 players on their roster.
