Hichem Manai is the manager of Sal’s Pizza in Suffolk. The pizza parlor has reopened its location off Godwin Boulevard after the April 28 tornado last year tore down the facility. Originally from New York, Sal’s Pizza has expanded to multiple locations in Hampton Roads.
Q: How did you get into the pizza business in Suffolk?
A: We opened one in New York, and then we moved here to Virginia. We started our first one in Virginia Beach, off Laskin Road. Then, we needed to expand and came out to Suffolk. Then the tornado came. We had to wait for the place to be built back up to come back, and now we have come back.
Q: Have you seen any differences since you reopened?
A: No, not really. I’m glad to have our customers back in Suffolk. They were right here when we opened back up. Suffolk is getting bigger, so that’s a good thing.
Q: How would you describe your restaurant to someone who has never been to it?
A: I would say it has a very nice, family atmosphere with very good food. We try to cook things to perfection for our customers, so we keep the food good and the customers happy.
Q: What’s your favorite thing on the menu?
A: I like stromboli. It’s my favorite thing on the menu. I like pizza too — that goes without saying — but stromboli is my favorite.
