AARP to host 64th House candidates

The Windsor AARP chapter will have its monthly meeting this week as usual, but it won’t be the usual meeting.

The chapter is hosting the three candidates for the 64th House of Delegates district, and the public will be able to attend the meeting and talk to the candidates. The 64th district covers Surry County, Williamsburg, and parts of Franklin and Isle of Wight, James City and Southampton counties.

“We try to do this for all the local elections,” said Nan Mosiman, treasurer of the Windsor AARP chapter. “Two years ago, we had four county supervisor (seats) and various other positions in the county … we invited 21 candidates.”

The chapter’s meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 21. The public is invited to come early for coffee and pastries at 10 a.m., which also will be the best time to talk with the candidates one-on-one, Mosiman said.

Once the meeting begins, the three candidates — incumbent Bill Barlow and challengers Stan Clark and Albert Burckard Jr. — will be given about 10 minutes each to speak. There then will be a question and answer session, Mosiman said.

“It is not a debate,” Mosiman said. “It is strictly a meet and greet kind of thing.”

Because it is an AARP chapter, it is not allowed to endorse a candidate itself, but still does the meetings for elections as a public service, Mosiman said.

“At AARP, we are not allowed to endorse a candidate, but we can certainly bring them to the people to let them speak to them and make their own decisions,” she said. “We like to get the candidates and we open to the public whether they’re AARP members or not. We think it’s a service we’re providing.”

The meeting will be held at the Windsor Ruritan Clubhouse on Community Drive in Windsor.
